What Are Chiropractic Adjustments?

Chiropractors perform specific adjustments to assist the body in healing itself. These adjustments correct problems that often occur in the body called subluxations. The Five Components of Misaligned Spinal Bones

Chiropractors are the only professionals specifically trained to find and fix subluxations. Subluxations are bones of the spine that become misaligned. However, subluxations are a lot more than a bone that is misaligned. Other structures of the body become affected in addition to the bone that is misaligned. There are five main components to the subluxation.

The first is the nerve component. When bones of the spine become misaligned, the nervous system is often affected. Any anatomy textbook will teach you that the nervous system is the master system in the body. When bones become misaligned, they often cause irritation to the nerves nearby. This causes a disruption in the energy that flows through the nerve. This nerve irritation causes loss of function in whatever those nerves are controlling in the body.

The second component of subluxation is the bone component. This is the misaligned bone itself. When the bone becomes misaligned, it can cause narrowing in the joint space. The third component is the muscular component. Muscles attach to the bones that surround a joint. Muscle contraction allows for movement of the joint and the motion we need for life. When the nerve becomes irritated it often results in muscle spasms or weakness in the muscles. Muscle spasms can pull the bones further out of alignment resulting in a vicious cycle.

The fourth component is the soft tissue component. Subluxations affect other tissues in and around the joint such as ligaments, tendons, blood vessels and the cushions between the spinal bones known as discs. When the bones become misaligned, they can stretch and tear these delicate structures. This can result in scar tissue and irreversible damage if left long enough. The cushions between the bones can become squished and deteriorate over time. This is often called spinal degeneration or degenerative joint disease.

The fifth component is the chemical component. Subluxations can cause a chemical imbalance in the joint. Toxins can build up in the area because of the lack of motion in the joint. Normal motion in a joint causes a pumping action that pumps toxins out and draws fluid and nutrients into the joint. When the joint becomes injured because of subluxation, this process is restricted or unable to occur.

It is important to have subluxations corrected as early as possible to help prevent these negative changes from occurring. These changes can get progressively worse over time and may result in irreversible damage if left long enough. Most of the modern day children are suffering from weight problems and the rate is growing day by day. The dilemma occurs from the fact of not really having physical exercise in children and poor dieting. Today many of the kids desire to have fun with their spare time by playing video games, watching television, or by reading. One of the most fun activities and easiest to implement is capture the flag. Separate the children into team teams, each with their own territory to protect. Give each team a flag to place deep inside their territory. Dress the teams with different color shirts so they know who is who. The aim is to try and steal the other teams flag by running into their territory. Make it even more fun by putting someone in charge to "tag" the opposing team. This makes it so they are doing more running and strategically planning their escape route! When someone is tagged, they can be released by another team member tagging them in. The game is won by capturing the flag and will provide hours of endless fun.

(TCM) is the epitome of Chinese culture. For 5,000 years it has served the Chinese people, and its use has spread all over the world. Today, more people than ever practice TCM to treat a wide range of health conditions.

The premise of TCM is that illness is caused by a blockage of energy flow so treatments are aimed at removing the blockage. TCM includes the following treatment modalities--

Acupuncture

Based on the belief that energy flows through living things along pathways called meridians. Each organ system has a meridian. Needles are inserted at points on these meridians to balance the flow of energy and restore health. A wide variety of health problems can be helped by acupuncture.

Gua sha is used for pain relief especially for those who store stress in the back and shoulders.

Moxibustion

Often used to treat back pain, menstrual cramps, or digestive troubles. In moxibustion the herbs mugwort or wormwood are burned on top of the acupuncture needle to help restore the flow of energy.

Tui Na

In this form of massage, the client wears loose clothing and no shoes. Sometimes herbal preparations may be applied. Tui na is not a 'feel good' type of massage, but aims to get restore movement to frozen joints. Students practice on bags of sand and rice to strengthen their hands before working with a person.

While TCM is practiced routinely in China, in other countries it is considered a complementary or alternative health practice. Nevertheless, statistics from the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine show Americans increasingly use this form of treatment.

Why Can't I Adjust Myself?

One of the most common questions I hear from patients is if they can adjust themselves, or if they really need to see a chiropractor. My answer is always the same, not even chiropractors can adjust themselves. It seems that most people only view an adjustment as having their neck and back "cracked" and do not realize the real purpose the adjustment serves.

First, the adjustment is more than just "popping your back." It is a specific maneuver that is used to either put a single vertebrae back into position, or to restore motion to a joint that is not moving properly. Chiropractors should perform detailed exams before ever performing an adjustment to make sure that they know which joint needs to be adjusted. Whenever I see people "popping" their own neck, they usually place their hand on their chin, then rotate their head to the side. They don't know what they're getting to pop and what isn't. This is why chiropractors use a specific contact on the joint they are trying to move, so that they can be sure they are adjusting the right segment.

Another important thing to remember is that a vertebrae can become misaligned in a number of different directions. A vertebrae can move in up to 16 different directions, and it is important to know which direction it has moved in before it is adjusted. Chiropractors are trained to determine which direction the vertebrae has moved, and how to put it back in the proper position. People who "crack" their necks don't know where the vertebrae has moved, thus could cause the bone to shift even further out of position.

Another thing that I commonly see in people who feel like they can adjust their selves is that they constantly have to "pop" their own neck or back. The reason for this is that when they "crack" their neck, their body releases endorphins, which are hormones that produce the feeling of well being. In other words, they make you feel good. Unfortunately, this endorphin high typically only lasts about 15 minutes, at which point the person usually feels the need to pop their neck again. So, they're not doing anything to improve their pain level, they are just masking it with endorphins. Adjustments, on the other hand, actually train the vertebrae to stay in the proper position, fixing the problem that is causing your pain, so that you don't rely on endorphins to make you feel better.

In conclusion, you can not adjust yourself, not even can chiropractors can. You may be able to pop or crack you own back, but you are just covering up the symptoms and not doing anything to actually fix the problem. You may even be making the problem worse.

Constipation Is One Symptom Of IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a disorder relating to the colon in the digestive system. This disorder can cause distress and make the individual feel extremely uncomfortable. The ailment does not however damage the intestines and may not lead to life threatening disease. It can be easily controlled, as long as one pays attention to their diet, stress levels and any medication they may take. Symptoms such as cramping and bloating are prevalent as well as constipation caused by irritable bowel syndrome.

IBS is more common than people may think, and a large portion of the population deals with it on a daily basis. Symptoms can vary from individual to individual, but is usually found to be present in ones mid thirties. There are two main methods of performing colon cleansing. The method involves using formulated products; the other involves having a practitioner conduct a colon irrigation procedure.

Colon cleansing using formulated products involves the intake of powdered or liquid supplements. Some supplements can be taken by mouth, others need to be taken through the rectum. In both cases, however the aim is to force the colon to expel its contents. These supplements are readily available through food stores, supermarkets and the internet. Obviously this is the less intrusive of the two types.

The second, and definitely the more intrusive, type is known as colon irrigation or high colonics. The first modern colon irrigation machine was invented in the early 1900's. Today this procedure is performed by colon hygienists or colon therapists. Colon irrigation is similar to an enema. However, it involves much more water and none of odour or discomfort.

While lying on a table, the colon hygienist will pump 20 gallons of water into the rectum through a tube. Once the water is in the colon, the therapist will massage the abdomen. After this, the fluids and waster will be flushed out through another tube. This process may be repeated and a colon irrigation session can last up to an hour.

A variety of water pressures and temperature with can be combined with enzymes, herbs or probiotics can be used by the practitioner.

The main theory behind colon cleansing is something known as auto-intoxication. This theory states that undigested meat and other foods cause mucus to build up in the colon. The result of the build up is toxins, which according to the theory, enter the blood's circulation, poisoning the blood. Some people claim that theses toxins can cause symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, low energy among others.

This could have less to do with the toxins and more to do with the nervous system. Reflexes in the bowel affect the nervous system. Enema can relieve a large number of symptoms caused by constipation. If this is the case with enemas, the colon cleansing could have the same effect.
